texting while working?

you should read this

A random realization hit me while I was on my trip. I wanted to write about it before the idea’s honeymoon phase got killed.

I might have told you this already or you know if you have met me, I hardly use my phone with people.

I believe the opposite person deserves complete attention if they’ve come to meet me (I expect the same in return, but that’s a different story.)

Getting to the point…

When I am with people or in my personal space, I don’t worry about work. I don’t keep checking my notifications or messages. I don’t have an urge to see what the client has said.

I’ll see the messages when I see the messages.

But But…

If the roles are reversed, the clarity is not just the same: I work on a client project and text my friends simultaneously.

When I think about it, clients deserve my complete attention too.

If I can skip client communication while I am with friends to give them complete attention, why not do the opposite as well?

I am NOT telling you to cut off your friends and become a ‘hustler.’ Nor am I promoting anything ‘toxic’ as most Twitter or LinkedIn gurus would.

But practically speaking…

After three months of deep work sessions (working 2 hours straight without touching your phone; once per day), I believe not texting friends while working brings great balance.

  • Your focus is higher

  • You get things done faster

  • You get to spend more time with your friends later

  • You won’t get distracted/triggered by anything you see on social media

Worked for me.

Think about it.
