Fixing my life in 30 days: Day 17
public speaking, working less, and being gifted
I want to write on some really interesting topics, but I hardly have any energy now. Plus the weather is cozy enough to put all my motivation to sleep.
But I have sent you nothing but plain updates in the last two days. I want to give you something nice to read today. I’ll try if I can give you short reads:
Public Speaking
Interestingly I get excited with public speaking and it surprises me when someone says they get nervous. NGL, I get nervous too, but it’s mostly when I am unprepared. I am usually confident when I have clarity on what I am going to speak about.
More than nervousness, I get uncomfortable when I get too conscious about how I look, how my posture is, and if I am framing the sentences right.
When I am in the zone, I can speak for three hours straights without losing the intensity.
‘You’re a natural’
How nice and offensive is it to hear someone say ‘you are a natural’ about your skill? I mean, you’ve put in thousands of reps and you get things right down to the detail only to hear people say you’re gifted or it all comes naturally to you.
I sometimes want to scream, “IT DID NOT COME NATURALLY AND I HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO HONE MY SKILLS THE WAY THEY LOOK TODAY,” but I know people mean good and they want to compliment you.
So I bring out my big, cute smile and say Thank you!
Work less
I am changing from being a person who works 24/7 to a guy who works as less as possible and gets things done with more impact.
I have realized the more I stick to my desk, the more I am prone to prolonging the tasks and ignoring other aspects of my life. Vikra is not ‘Work Vikra’ after all. There are different versions of Vikra and all versions deserve their respective time.
I am trying to increase my off-desk time and do more offline stuff, preferably including people in some capacity. The drawing you’ve seen recently is one of the steps towards it. Cooking is another one I am looking at.
Titles
Speaking of different versions, I like how I introduce myself at different places.
If I am speaking to someone on Twitter, I am a content creator. If I am talking to a marketing head, I am an email copywriter and newsletter strategist. To sports people, I am a cricketer. To academics, I am a teacher. To nomads, I am *kinda* traveller. At my parents’ offices, I am their son. If I go to meet my friend’s friends, I am my friend’s friend.
In my opinion, you have a more interesting life if you have more titles.
Ah, I have many more topics to write about, but I am verge of typing and not writing. I better wrap up.
Oh btw, about today (I was Saturdaying hehe):
Had a match this morning. It was 3 pm by the time I came back from the match, watched a couple of YS episodes, and had 1.5 hours of sleep
Worked on three separate projects for thirty minutes each
Spent some time creating assignments for future hires at Cognition. Posted the assignments on Fueler for Brands
I started watching this Telugu thriller series on Prime called Vyooham (Strategy.) There’s positive talk about this series—4 episodes in and it’s good so far
Did some reading on animal cognitive abilities (don’t ask me why, I was bored)
I’ll see you tomorrow. Have a lovely weekend!
